New Mom Must-Haves

Updated: Jul 27, 2021

Let's be honest, when I was pregnant, I wish someone would have told me the things I would actually use and need to make my life easier... and the ones that really didn't matter

must-haves:

I want to start off by highly recommending Babylist. That way you can literally put anything on your baby registry from any store. So simple and you will be able to add all of your wishlist items from Amazon, Target and Buy Buy Baby.

1. DIAPER BAG

I love our Jujube. It has lasted us 4 years so far and it's still going strong! So comfortable and fashionable with many compartments. You will also love this more affordable option.

2. DOHM SOUND MACHINE (bring to the hospital too, thank me later)

We have one in each baby's room and it works miracles. They rarely wake up - even when there's a loud thunderstorm or one of them is screaming.

3. HALO BASSINET

You can always resell when you are done and reuse it if you have more children. We used it for 6 months with each baby and sold it after! Holds its value well and is SO WORTH IT.

4. CRIB

We got a cute inexpensive white one from Target that worked great.

5. SUMMER INFANT BABY MONITOR

6. CHANGING PAD + CHANGING TABLE TOPPER

Obviously, a changing table is a must but I wanted to use my old dresser I had growing up with a changing table topper because I can remove it when they are no longer in diapers and still have the dresser.

7. SLEEP SACKS

Newborn sleep swaddles are key. We found these were the best ones and the easiest to change and wash. When they were 3+ months we switched to the regular sleep sacks. **PRO TIP: try leaving their arms out if they don't like it, my babies hated their arms swaddled

8. ZIPPER SLEEPERS

My babies lived in these. All day, all night literally. When you are changing them every 20 mins, convenience is everything! You will also only need a few newborn ones, buy 0-3 month sizes and ONLY zipper ones - thank me later.

9. AQUAPHOR

Best cream hands down. We used it whenever they would start to get a diaper rash and it would go away super quick.

10. BURP CLOTHS

These are nothing fancy. There's no need to spend a lot of money on something that will get so dirty. So skip the cute, expensive ones because sometimes they get so gross you just throw them away.

11. BOPPY

This is a must whether you are nursing or bottle-feeding. Great for night time feedings in bed. I remember watching tv late at night during the lovely witching hours.

skip the next 3 if you are formula feeding

12. SPECTRA S2 BREAST PUMP

13. NURSING BRAS + NURSING PADS

I literally lived in these when I was home. Basically a nursing sports bra, ha! Convenient, comfortable, easy, no clips etc. just pull down whatever side when you are nursing.

14. BREASTMILK STORAGE BAGS + PLASTIC STORAGE BIN

15. COMOTOMO or AVENT BOTTLES

We tried so many bottles (Dr. Brown, Munchkin Latch, etc.) and these were the best, most easy to clean with only 3 parts. Plus baby loved them. I'd also suggest skipping the 5 oz. bottles and just purchasing the 8 oz. ones because we only used the 5 oz. ones for a couple months.

16. FORMULA / SNACK TRAVEL CONTAINER

A must have if you are formula feeding, but also when they get to be a little older, it's perfect for snacks.

17. DISHWASHER BASKET

This thing is a lifesaver, my babies are now 4 and almost 3 years old, and we still use it for sippy cup lids and toddler utensils! When they were babies, it held all of the smaller baby bottle parts.

18. BOTTLE DRYING RACK

This is a must have for washing all of those newborn bottles. Even if you are breastfeeding, occasionally you may want to pump or have someone else feed baby.

19. STROLLER + CARRIER TRAVEL SYSTEM

Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 - single or double stroller. We had both of the Graco's listed below and this is hands down the best. We have the double stroller, which we can push one handed, it glides, and is the Cadillac of baby strollers, HA. Worth every penny.

If you want something a little more affordable, I'd go with the Graco FastAction Fold Jogger Travel System or the Graco Ready2Grow double stroller. Simple/easy to use, super compatible, grows with them from newborn to toddler, and it is inexpensive.

**If you know you are going to have more children, I would consider getting a double stroller. We ended up selling our single after a year and buying a double stroller. We love our Baby Jogger City Mini GT and wish we would have bought it first!

20. CARRIER INSERT

This will be important for helping your newborns head more stable and secure in the carrier while you are on walks or in the car.

21. CARRIER TRAVEL SOUND MACHINE

This is a must have to prevent crying while out and about. We used it every time we were in the car or did a date night out anywhere and it helped keep them asleep/quiet.

22. PACK N PLAY

This is a given and a must. You might not use it right away but you will use this when you travel and when your baby starts crawling, you will want to contain them.

23. GRACO SWING

We used this nightly while we relaxed together. It kept baby quiet and happy, and let's be honest, it gave mom and dad a break from holding baby 24/7. Lifesaver!

24. BABY BATH SUPPORT

25. BATH MAT

I still use this, 4 years later. It's a must for your knees.

26. NOSE FRIDA

Get this and thank me later.

If you are a new mom or mama-to-be, this is for you.

pass + save your money:

**these are items you should pass on if you have to spend your own money on them

BABY SLING

We had three of these and never used them. Mostly because they were difficult to situate baby and they were usually in the stroller or in the baby swing. Also, let's be honest, when I needed a break, the last thing I wanted was a baby on me. These were also pretty hot and I'm almost always COLD. The only one I semi-liked was the WildBird ring sling and I still only used it once. So if you must have one, I'd recommend that one!

NURSERY CHAIR

Definitely get one if you have your heart set on one! We passed on it though because there honestly wasn't enough room in the nursery for it. I ended up being totally fine without one because I nursed the babies in our bed. No way I wanted to get up in the middle of the night to go feed them in the nursery, so for me personally, I'm glad we didn't get one.

SHOPPING CART / HIGH CHAIR COVERS

We bought one and maybe used it once, don't waste your money. They were a hassle to put on and I would forget to bring them. Just use a disinfecting wipe ;)

CHANGING PAD COVERS + CHANGING PAD LINERS

We used these but newborns get them dirty 24/7. Much easier to wipe down the actual changing pad then washing the covers/liners each time.

WIPE WARMER

Not necessary and more of a hassle than anything- annoying to clean as it got moldy and you have to change the replacement pad every month, which is an extra expense.

DIAPER PAILS

Hard pass, save your money. They are not worth it as they smell and you have to purchase/replace the liners frequently. I like the little trash cans that I can empty daily.

LOVEVERY THE PLAY GYM

Don't get me wrong, it's so cute and I was super excited about this but we used it only a handful of times and it took up so much room.

Let me know in the comments if you agree with these and what you found most helpful. Please share with your friends who are new parents or soon-to-be parents! I appreciate you
